MUMBAI: Mumbai witnessed its 50th cadaveric donation at Fortis Hospital, Mulund when the family of a brain dead patient consented to donate his liver. This saved and enriched the life of a 46 year-old male recipient from Badlapur who had been waiting for more than a month for the transplant.
The patient sustained a fall, causing brain hemorrhage, when he was rushed to the hospital.
The donor, a real estate agent, collapsed at his residence before he was rushed to the hospital. The patient's condition continued to deteriorate and subsequently was declared brain dead.
Following counseling, the family was encouraged by the brother of the patient to donate his organs. The donor is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Conducting surgeon Dr Rakesh Rai said, "It is heartening to see families respond positively towards organ donation. We are happy with the recipient's response to the transplant. We will continue to monitor his condition for the next 48 to 72 hours."
